Four kinds of Huntingdon frontage, and what each one needs
Huntingdon is really several towns stacked on top of each other, and the driveways show it. The centre around High Street and Market Hill is Georgian and Victorian, with narrow frontages, shared accesses and a lot of parking that happens on the street rather than off it. Ring that with the estates built when the town took London overspill in the 1960s and 1970s, at Oxmoor, Hartford and Sapley, and you get the layout we see most often: a semi detached or terraced house with a single width run of hardstanding down one side and a strip of lawn beside it, laid when the house was built and never touched since. Newer development at Stukeley Meadows and around Hinchingbrooke tends to give a wider, open plan frontage with room for two cars side by side.
That single width run is the job we are asked about most in Huntingdon, because two cars no longer fit on it. Widening it in block paving leaves an obvious seam where the old work meets the new, and the two batches of blocks almost never match once the original has weathered. Pattern imprinted concrete deals with that differently: the old drive and the strip of lawn are broken out together, one sub base is prepared across the whole frontage, and the surface is poured and stamped as a single piece, so there is no line down the middle of the finished driveway.
Underneath, Huntingdon changes as you cross the town. Close to the Great Ouse at Hartford and around the Hinchingbrooke side there are river gravels and made ground; the higher ground west towards Brampton and Stukeley is heavier clay. That difference matters more than the pattern you pick, because it decides how much has to come out and how deep the compacted sub base needs to go before anything is poured. Before Anything Is Poured
Ground, access and drainage in Huntingdon
Frontages here are usually shallow, so access and setting out matter. We look at the fall of the ground away from the house, where the surface water currently goes, and whether the drive meets the pavement at a dropped kerb wide enough for the finished layout. Imprinted concrete does not let water through, so falls and any channel drain are designed into the job rather than added afterwards. On the Oxmoor and Hartford estates the original hardstanding is often thin and laid straight on to the subsoil, so the honest answer on depth comes after we have seen what is under it.

- Can you widen a single width driveway on the Oxmoor or Hartford estates?
- That is one of the most common jobs we are asked about in Huntingdon. The usual approach is to take up the existing hardstanding and the strip of lawn beside it together, prepare one sub base across the whole frontage, then pour and stamp the surface as a single piece. Done that way there is no visible seam between the old parking area and the new one, which is the part that tends to look wrong when a block paved drive is extended.
- Do I need planning permission to pave my front garden in Huntingdon?
- In England, laying more than five square metres of a front garden with a surface that does not let water through needs planning permission, unless the run off is directed to a permeable area inside your own boundary rather than out on to the road. Imprinted concrete is not a permeable surface, so this is part of the design conversation. - Which colours work best against Huntingdon's older yellow brick?

Slate grey can look stark against that brick unless there is grey elsewhere on the house, such as a slate roof or grey window frames. - Yes, and it is often the sensible way to do it, because the same preparation and the same team cover both. Matching or complementary patterns front and back tie the property together instead of leaving two unrelated surfaces. - Will imprinted concrete suit a Victorian house in the town centre?
- It can, but the pattern choice matters more on a period frontage. Smaller scale finishes such as London cobble or a brick pattern usually read better against Victorian brickwork than a large slab pattern, which can look out of scale on a short frontage. Where the property sits in a conservation area you should check what is acceptable before committing to a colour.
- What actually happens at the site visit?
- We look at the existing surface and what is under it where that can be seen, measure the area, check the levels and the fall, look at where surface water currently runs and at the dropped kerb, and talk through how you use the space. Colour and pattern samples come with us. Nothing is agreed on the visit itself.
- Do you work on shared driveways and shared accesses?
- We can, but the boundary and the rights over the access need to be clear before anything starts, and both households usually need to agree on what happens at the join. That is a conversation we would rather have at the quoting stage than halfway through the work.
