Old village, service housing, new build: three starting points
Brampton has an unusually clean split for a village of its size. There is the old core around Church Road, High Street and the streets off them, where plots are irregular, walls and hedges are established and the frontage often has to work around a mature tree. There is the housing associated with the former RAF Brampton, laid out to a service plan with generous verges, uniform frontages and a lot of repetition down each road. And since the base closed there has been new building at Brampton Park, which brings the current estate pattern of tighter plots, integral garages and short parking areas.
Those service era frontages are the ones we get asked about most. They were built with a modest area of hardstanding and a big lawn, at a time when one car per household was the assumption. Converting a slice of that lawn into parking is straightforward work, but if it is done in a different material the frontage ends up looking patched. A single continuous pour across the old and new areas avoids that, because there is no junction between two surfaces to go wrong.
The ground varies with the river. Brampton sits between the Great Ouse meadows and the higher ground running west towards the A1, so a frontage near the water behaves differently from one up towards Brampton Wood. That affects how much has to come out and how the drainage is designed, and it is a large part of why we look at a property before saying what the work involves.

Colours and patterns for Brampton properties
The former RAF housing is mostly a plain, unfussy brick, and it takes a mid grey or a sandstone surface well without needing anything dramatic. The older village core has more variety, including render and painted brick, so warmer tones tend to sit better there. On the newer Brampton Park houses, charcoal or slate grey with a contrasting border matches the current palette of grey frames and darker roofs.

Before Anything Is Poured
Ground, access and drainage in Brampton
The main practical questions in Brampton are the verge, the tree and the water. Where a frontage meets a wide grass verge, the dropped kerb and the point where the drive crosses the verge need to be right before anything is laid. Where there is a mature tree, its roots and its future growth are a design constraint rather than a detail. And because imprinted concrete does not let water through, the falls and any channel drain are worked out at the design stage, especially on the lower frontages towards the meadows.

- Do you install driveways in Brampton?

- Can you turn part of a big front lawn into parking?
- Yes, and on the former RAF housing that is the job we see most often. The existing hardstanding and the part of the lawn being given up are prepared together as one area, so the finished surface is a single continuous pour rather than an old drive with a newer piece bolted on to the side of it.
- There is a mature tree on my frontage. Can the driveway go round it?
- It depends on the tree, where the roots run and whether it is protected. A tree can be designed around, with the layout shaped to keep clear of it, but that has to be worked out on site rather than on a plan. If the tree has a preservation order the council is the authority on what can happen near it.
- How does the driveway cross a grass verge?
- Where a frontage meets a highway verge, the crossing point and the dropped kerb are the local highway authority's business, and the layout has to work with what is permitted there rather than around it. We will look at what you have and tell you if we think it needs attention before the work is worth doing.
- Is the pattern the same across the whole driveway?
- Usually the main field is one pattern with a border in a second pattern and often a second colour, which is what gives the surface a defined edge. You can keep it to a single pattern throughout if you prefer a plainer result. It is worth deciding at the samples stage because the border affects the setting out.
- Can you do a patio and a path in the back garden too?
- Yes. Patios and paths are two of the three things we install, and a lot of Brampton gardens have a long side access that benefits from being done at the same time as the front. Running the same colour through makes the property read as one design rather than three separate jobs.
- What is under the finished surface?
- A prepared, compacted sub base carries the load, and the coloured concrete is laid over it and stamped while it is still workable. How deep the excavation and the sub base need to be depends on the ground and on what will be using the surface, which is settled after we have seen the site.
- Do you take away the old driveway material?
- Yes, clearing the existing surface is part of the work where breaking out is needed. What comes out and how much of it there is affects the quote, so it is one of the things we look at on the visit.
- Will weeds grow through it?
- A continuous poured surface has far fewer joints than block or slab paving, so there are fewer of the gaps where weeds usually take hold. We would not claim more than that, because anything laid outdoors can collect material at its edges and needs cleaning from time to time.
- Can you work around a caravan or a boat that has to stay on the drive?
- It needs planning between us before the work starts, because a fresh surface has to be left alone for a period before anything is driven or parked on it. If there is nowhere else for a vehicle to go, tell us at the quoting stage so it can be worked into how the job is staged.
- Do you install for commercial properties in Brampton?
