When the plot is not square, the surface is formed to fit
Fenstanton sits between St Ives and Cambridge, just off the A14, and it has kept a proper village centre. Around the clock tower, High Street and Church Lane the buildings are older, the plots are irregular and parking is often a single space reached through a gap between buildings. Lancelot Brown, who laid out half the country's parkland, is buried in the church here, which is a fair reminder that in a village like this the shape of what you lay matters as much as the material.
Out from that centre, the estate and infill development of the later twentieth century gives much more ordinary frontages: rectangular, open or lightly bounded, usually with a garage and enough width to park two cars once the lawn is included. These are the plots where most of our Fenstanton work happens, and the typical job is exactly that, a narrow original drive widened into one continuous surface across the frontage.
The ground reflects the Ouse valley position, with gravel and alluvial deposits towards the low ground and the lakes and heavier material on the rising ground. As always, what is under your particular frontage decides the dig and the sub base, and imprinted concrete being a sealed surface means the falls and any drainage are designed before the layout is fixed rather than added later.

The older Fenstanton buildings mix warm brick, render and pantile, and they suit sandstone, autumn brown and softer greys. The newer estate housing is plainer and takes slate grey or charcoal well, particularly with a contrasting border to give a rectangular area a defined edge. Ground, access and drainage in Fenstanton
In the old centre, access and setting out are the constraints, because an irregular space has no straight line to work from and the entry may be narrow. On the estates it is levels and drainage: where the frontage falls, whether water currently runs towards the house, and where a channel drain needs to go. Both are settled on site.

- Can a pattern be laid to an irregular shape?
- Yes, and that is one of the practical advantages of a poured surface over a unit paving material. The concrete is formed to whatever shape the space actually is, and the pattern is stamped across it, so there is no cutting of blocks around a curve and no awkward slivers at the edge. The border is what makes an irregular edge look intentional.
- My parking space is reached through a narrow gap. Is that workable?
- It depends on the gap and on what is beyond it, so it is something to look at rather than answer in advance. Access affects how the material and the ground work are handled. Tell us roughly how wide the entry is when you get in touch.
- Does being close to the A14 make any difference?
- Not to the work itself. It is useful for getting to you, and that is about the extent of it. What matters on your job is the ground, the levels and the access at the property.
- Can you lay a patio that follows a curved lawn edge?
- Yes, and a curve usually looks better than a straight edge in a garden that is not rectangular. The published buff ashlar patio with the curved terracotta border is a good illustration of what that looks like once it is finished.
- How thick is the concrete?
- The build up depends on what the surface has to carry and on the ground beneath it, so a driveway and a patio are not the same. We set it after seeing the site rather than quoting a standard figure, because a standard figure would be wrong on half the plots we look at.
- Do you need to remove a hedge or fence to get access?
- Sometimes access requires something to be moved temporarily, and that is a conversation to have at the quoting stage. We will tell you honestly if we think something needs to come out, rather than discovering it on the first morning.
- Can you extend an existing imprinted concrete driveway?
- It is possible, but a new pour beside a weathered one will not match exactly, and any honest installer will tell you that. If a close match matters, replacing the whole area gives a far better result than extending it.
- Will the surface be affected by tree roots?
- Roots can lift or crack any hard surface over time, so nearby trees are part of what we look at when planning a layout. Sometimes the answer is to keep the surface clear of a tree rather than to build up to it.
- Do you clear up and take the waste away?
- Yes. Removing the old surface and the excavated material is part of the work where it is needed, and clearing the site at the end is not an optional extra.
- Can I choose a colour from a photograph?
- You can start there, but do not finish there. Colours read very differently on a screen from how they look in daylight against your own brick, so we bring physical samples to the visit for exactly that reason.
